What Is Great Place To Work® Certification™®?

Great Place To Work® Certification™ recognizes organizations that deliver an outstanding employee experience.

The Certification process consists of two steps: a detailed employee survey and a short questionnaire about your workforce. The final score is determined by the results of both components.

Being Certified helps attract top talent and identifies organizations that foster an outstanding workplace culture.

Certification provides employers with a competitive advantage in hiring, offering trusted validation of the employee experience—backed by research and the global recognition of Great Place To Work®.

The
Great Place To Work Model®:

Trust at the Core

Trust is at the heart of every great workplace, as reflected in the Great Place To Work® Model. According to our research, a great workplace is defined by four key experiences: employees trust their leaders, they feel genuine pride in their work, they enjoy collaborating with colleagues, and they experience a consistent workplace environment regardless of role, identity, or position within the organization. Trust-based organizations not only attract top talent but also achieve significant long-term financial success.

In general, the Great Place To Work® Trust Index™ survey measures the level of trust within your organization and the consistency of the employee experience. In other words: How often can employees count on something to happen in the workplace—such as clear and honest leadership, fair treatment, and meaningful recognition?

More specifically, the Trust Index™ survey measures the individual experiences of employees across five dimensions of a high-trust workplace culture, through 60 statements and two open-ended questions. Three dimensions focus on leadership behaviors that create trust: credibility, respect, and fairness. The other two measure employees’ experience with colleagues and the organization overall: pride and a sense of belonging.

Together, these five dimensions create a workplace culture where employees feel empowered and motivated, making their work more meaningful. Great Place To Work® research shows that high-trust cultures consistently outperform competitors in hiring and retention, productivity and innovation, and financial results.

Survey responses are evaluated on a five-point scale, revealing the most common employee experiences in your organization. Scores are averaged to provide an overall workplace culture assessment: the Trust Index™ score.

Our platform is designed to support diverse feedback needs. You can use it to gather insights from different groups within your organization—whether you are conducting engagement surveys, onboarding assessments, pulse checks, or other internal measurements.

This flexibility allows you to include different types of employees depending on your goals, such as contractors, interns, or even franchise employees.

However, Certification™ eligibility criteria are specific and must be strictly met. If you are unsure about how to include different groups within your survey, or if you have additional questions, our team will be glad to guide you.

To be eligible, you must include all individuals who are legally employed by your organization, receive direct payment from your organization, and fall into one or more of the following categories at the time of survey launch:

    • Employment status: all part-time and full-time employees.
    • Roles: including the CEO and all staff levels.
    • Locations: all organizational sites.
    • Union status: unionized and non-union employees.
    • New hires: including employees from recent acquisitions or mergers
    • Remote work: telecommuters and employees working from home.
    • Employment type: temporary, seasonal, hourly, interns, and trainees.
    • Age employees under 18, where legally permitted.

Important: Intentionally or unintentionally excluding any eligible group, or failing to invite the required number of employees, will result in disqualification from Certification™ and from eligibility for Best Workplaces™ lists.

Do not include individuals who are not legally employed by your organization at the time of the survey launch, such as:

    • Contractors: employees of other organizations or independent workers. They must be surveyed by their legal employer.
    • Employees on leave: individuals not actively working and not expected to perform duties during their leave period.
    • Franchise employees: typically employed by the franchisee, not the franchisor. Only include them if they are legally employed by your organization.
